The course of the Olympic Games - Day 1

Players went in front of the statue of Zeus, which was in his temple. It is one of the seven wonders of the world and was made by the Greek sculptor – Phidias. It was made of ivory, gold and precious gemstones and it measures 12 m. Players sacrificed animals to god, and swore to fight according to the rules of the competition. If any of the players had broken a promise, unpleasant fate awaited him. Beside the wrath of God and shame among the people, he had to put bronze statue engraved with his own name near the temple of Zeus. It was to remind his descendants about his mistake. In addition, the first day was held for a presentation of the Olympians (each polis had its own representative) and lit the Olympic torch - a symbol of the Games.
